On behalf of the BIGCS, Dr. Qiu Xiu, the director of BIGCS attended the European Society for Biopreservation and Biobanking (ESBB) conference and delivered a speech.

In collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and a team of women's health experts from the University of Birmingham, the Birth Cohort has jointly constructed a real-time review network system on COVID-19, an international hot topic, and published research papers in BMJ, a leading international journal.

Secretary of Party Committee Xia Huimin, Director Wei Jianrui, Deputy Dean Li Qingfeng from GWCMC, Director Tang Yaping from Guangzhou Institute of Pediatrics , Director Zuo Lian Dongdong of the Department of Science, Education and Information, and Dr. Qiu Xiu, the director of BIGCS received the visitors.

Professor Marian Knight from Nuffield School of Population Health at Oxford University visited BIGCS. Prof. Marian Knight is one of the first research professors working at the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and an expert in the field of maternal and child health. Professor Marian Knight shared the areas related to pregnancy complications. Director of BIGCS, Dr Qiu Xiu, briefly introduced the research of BIGCS.

Prof. Daniel Goldowitz from UBC Children's Hospital in Canada visited BIGCS. Professor Daniel Goldowitz is an internationally recognized expert on brain development and brain diseases. Director of BIGCS, Dr Qiu Xiu, discussed with Professor Daniel Goldowitz about the topics in BIGCS on child neurodevelopment and directions of future cooperation.

Prof. Fang Fang and two of her colleagues from the Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics of Karolinska Medical College, Sweden, visited the recruitment room, child follow-up center, and bio-bank of BIGCS. Director of BIGCS, Dr Qiu Xiu, introduced the construct, management, and scientific research directions of BIGCS.

Prof. Arnaud Fontanet from Pasteur Institute of France and his colleague, Dr Rebecca Grant, visited the BIGCS for academic exchange and conducted in-depth discussions with BIGCS. During the visit, Secretary of Party Committee of GWCMC, Prof. Xia Huimin and Prof. Fontanet conducted in-depth academic exchanges and hoped to promote in-depth research in the field of acute infectious diseases of children. Subsequently, Professor Arnaud Fontanet and BIGCS conducted in-depth discussions on the progress of their cooperative project and the next step of cooperation.

Prof. Hubert Lam from Oxford University, who had long-term cooperation with BIGCS, visited the BIGCS for a week-long discussion and academic exchange. Two graduate students from Oxford University, Allison Gaines and Bethan Swift, also came to BIGCS with Prof. Lam. The two students were fully funded by Oxford University and began a one-month internship at BIGCS starting from 13 May 2019. During this period, they will discuss their graduation projects with the colleagues at BIGCS and complete data analysis for their own research direction. The arrival of the two students opens a new chapter in the cooperation between our medical center and Oxford University.

Prof. Wayne G. Shreffle, Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and Director of the Department of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology at Massachusetts General Hospital, together with his team members, Prof. Yuan Qian and Dr Su Kuan-wen, visited GWCMC. he had an in-depth exchange with Prof. Xia Huimin, CEO of the GWCMC, and discuss the cooperative intention of both sides.

Academician Christopher Proud, Prof. Robert Gibson, and Prof. Wang Xuemin from the South Australian Institute of Health and Medical Research, visited the Guangzhou Women and Children’s Medical Center (GWCMC). Prof. Robert Gibson gave a lecture to introduce his main research work in Australia to colleagues at the Institute of Pediatrics and BIGCS, and he expressed his willingness to cooperate with BIGCS. The three experts from Australia highly praised the achievements of the GWCMC and expressed their expectations for further cooperation.

Ben Willem Mol, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Monash University, visited BIGCS. The meeting was held in Room 610 in Poly Clover. Songying Shen, Jinhua Lu and their colleagues participated in the meeting. They had warm and thorough discussions on three main topics: gestational blood pressure and gestational age, outcomes of offspring born after IVF and natural conception, and prediction of LGA.

Dr Niu Haijing from Beijing Normal University came to the Born in Guangzhou Cohort Study Team (BIGCS) for introducing the latest research about the fNIR.

Dr. Wei Bao, assistant professor of the department of epidemiology from School of Public Health,University of Iowa College, visited BIGCS, and had in-depth discussion and exchanged of cooperative intentions on selection of scientific research topic and writing with Dr. Qiu and other members of the BIGCS.

Christopher Proud, an Australian academician and Professor of the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI), and Dr. Xuemin Wang, Associate Professor of the University of Adelaide and Principal Advisor of the SAHMRI-China collaborations, visited the GWCMC. They were warmly welcomed by Professor Xia, CEO of the GWCMC. Professor Proud and Dr. Wang visited the recruitment and follow-up rooms and the biobank of the BIGCS. Professor Proud introduced the SAHMRI on a presentation and discussed the plan for further cooperation with the members from the BIGCS. Professor Proud and Dr. Wang praised the achievement of the GWCMC and looked forward to the cooperation between Guangzhou and South Australia in maternal and child health.

Dr. Xuemin Wang visited GWCMC. She visited the recruitment and follow-up rooms of the BIGCS, the Institute of Pediatrics, and the Department of Hematological Oncology in the company of Dr Qiu. Dr. Wang also discussed with Dr. Qiu regarding the intention for cooperation.

Qian Zheng, Director of the clinical genetics program in Asian, senior clinical genetic consultant and national clinical scientist in British, visited BIGCS, and held a wonderful academic lecture. Finally, we communicated about future cooperation intention.

Dr. Justina Žurauskienė from Birmingham University was invited to BIGCS for a one-month internship study. She shared the new clustering method about identification model in single-celled transcription data and omics, and actively discussed with the colleagues.

Jean-Baptiste Cazier, Director of the Center for Information Biology, University of Birmingham, UK, and George Gkoutos, Chief Clinical Bioinformatics Officer, visited the laboratory of Born in Guangzhou Cohort Study. They discussed the strategies of anthropological research and data analysis, and then conducted in-depth discussions on future cooperation.

Tim Jones, Executive Vice President of Birmingham University, KK Cheng, President of practical medical research institute, Luke Wales, Director of International Strategy, Vivian Zheng, Director of Guangzhou Center of Birmingham University and Tony Moran, International Media Manager, visited Guangzhou Women's and Children's Medical Center and Dr. Qiu introduced research on Born in Guangzhou cohort study.

Aolin Wang, postdoctoral scholar at UCSF, visited BIGCS. Dr. Qiu and her colleagues participated the discussion. They had warm and thorough discussions on the following topics: using causal mediation analysis as a tool to estimate pathway effects in global health and occupational health context, developing and applying computational approaches to study the role of the environment in pregnancy outcomes and translating scientific methods, results, and broad implications to the public.

Anna Louise Funk, Eva Jeanne Louise Alice Rumpler, Amber Grace Kunkel from Institut Pasteur visited our hospital and the Guangzhou birth cohort study for the conduction of the micorcephaly surveillance project. They have discussed with Dr .Qiu and her colleagues about the pilot, case definition, study process, the questionnaires and the data input. This visit is a wrap up of the pilot study and for the preparation of the initiation of formal project.

Professor Bo Jacobsson, an Obstetric and Gynecology at Sahlgrenska Academy, visited BIGCS. Professor Jacobsson was heading the Perinatal Laboratory Research Team located at one of Northern Europe’s most busy pregnancy and delivery wards with more than 10 000 deliveries a year. He also had an appointment as senior researcher and a research group at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health in Oslo, Norway. His main focus of research is a) to understand and describe different aspects of the preterm delivery process and child outcome, b) to explore the genetics and gene by environment interaction of timing of birth (including preterm delivery and post term delivery) c) to explore basic epidemiological relations regarding preterm delivery and child outcome d) to develop and test different methods for improving fetal medicine.

Hubert Lam visited BIGCS about a week. During the visit, professor Lam and Dr. Qiu and her teammates focused on many topics, such as mechanism of data management and sharing, different selection strategy of sample size for different researches, integration of ideas for data analysis, continuity of research papers. They discussed corresponding solution for aforementioned fields, and the concrete implementation plan.

The International conference on women and children’s health hosted by Nature, Guangzhou Women and Children’s Hospital Center, and Guangdong Province Hospital Association during March 22-24, 2018 in Guangzhou, China, was one of the most influential and highest levels conferences. This was also the first time that Nature focused on the field of women and children. More than 30 internationally famous experts in gynaecology and obstetrics, reproductive medicine, and pediatrics took part in this conference and delivered the keynote speeches. On March 23, 2018, the second day of the conference, the Born in Guangzhou Cohort study held a round table meeting with more than 30 experts, including three Nature senior editors Francesca Cesari, I-han Chou, Joao Monteiro, Professor Qi Zhou, Professor Ching-Hon Pui, Professor Patricia Hunt, Professor Kar Keung Cheng and Professor Huimin Xia.

Willem van Scha from the Institute of Microbiology and Infection at the University of Birmingham in the UK visited the recruitment and follow-up rooms and the biobank of the BIGCS. Professor Schaik highly praised the hospital for its emphasis and investment in scientific research, cohoet construction, and the hospital's achievements in the field of women and children's health research. Subsequently, Professor Willem van Schaik gave a brilliant lecture on gut microbiota and antibiotic resistance, and had in-depth discussions on issues related to microbiota and antibiotic resistance. Professor Schaik collaborated with BIGCS to apply for the 2018 Guangzhou Science and Technology Innovation Commission's external cooperation project, which was successfully approved. Ewa Bloch, Director of City Life and International Cooperation, Leo Donato, Callum Day, Peter Young from the Innovate UK visited our hospital and the Guangzhou birth cohort study. Dr .Qiu and her colleagues took part in the reception and discussion. They first visited our recruiting room, follow-up room and biobank, and then participated in the discussion with Dr. Qiu about the development of the Guangzhou cohort study. The purpose of this visit is to follow up the memorandum of cooperation between the Innovate UK and the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Agency signed in mid-2017 and to do preparations for the next joint funding project.

Ben Willem Mol visited BIGCS. We had warm and thorough discussions on four main topics: prediction of gestational hypertensive disorders, maternal blood pressure during pregnancy and infant neurodevelopment, effectiveness of Action Plan for Safe Motherhood and Infancy on cesarean delivery rates, and association between serum progesterone concentration in early pregnancy and length of gestation.

Jon Frampton, Vice-president of Birmingham University, KK Cheng, President of practical medical research institute, Subrata Ghosh, President of translational medicine institute, Andrew Ould, British Vice-consul-general in Guangzhou and their colleagues visited our hospital. Professor Xia, Professor Tang, and Dr. Xiu introduced the history and future plan of GWCMC, Research Institute of Pediatrics, and BIGCS, respectively. The British deputation expressed their willingness and best wishes for our prosperous future cooperation.

Joseph D Tucker, Weiming Tang and Dan Wu from the Global health and communicative disease research institute in University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, came to visit the recruitment room, child follow-up clinic room and biobank of BIGCS.

Zisis Kozlakids, the president of ISBER, and his colleagues visited BIGCS. Zisis Kozlakids expressed his appreciation of the effort and achievements on BIGCS establishment and management. He also hoped that there will be more international cooperation and research in the future, which will benefit maternal and children’s health worldwide.

Professor Lennart Hammarström from Karolinska Institutet in Sweden visited BIGCS and exchanged academic opinions on immunogenetics with our colleagues. Later he gave us a talk on topic “Newborn screening-history and future”.

Professor Kin-bong Hubert Lam and his postgraduate student Brown Frances from the University of Oxford came to BIGCS and discussed about future cooperation. Ms. Brown Frances did her intern in BIGCS for one months and finished a manuscript about breast-feeding willingness. Its abstract has been already received as a poster in the 10th DOHaD conference.

Professor Jeffrey Gulcher, Chief scientific officer from WuXi Next CODE, and his colleague Professor Hongye Sun visited BIGCS. Professor Sun introduced the development of genetic technologies to our colleagues and then Professor Gulcher gave us a seminar on gene and precision medicine.

Ausma Bernotaite from Kent State University in United Kingdom visited BIGCS. She had a discussion on ethnical issues in the field of research with us.

Professor Robin R. Deterding from the University of Colorado Hospital came to visit GWCMC and BIGCS. Professor Deterding introduced to us the pattern of lung disease treatment and research in Colorado Children’s Hospital and had a heated discussion on this topic with our colleagues.

David Olson, professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics Physiology at the University of Alberta, the founding director or co-director of the University of Alberta Perinatal Research Centre, member of the CIHR Group in Perinatal Health and Disease, the CIHR Strategic Training Initiative in Maternal-Fetal-Newborn Health Research, and the AIHS Interdisciplinary Preterm Birth and Healthy Outcomes Team, came to visit GWCMC and BIGCS. CEO Professor Xia, Dr. Qiu and other colleagues gave a warm interview and discussed future cooperation with him and also discussed the improvement of PTB research in BIGCS. They reached a primary agreement on future collaboration. Professor Olson gave a presentation on ‘Stress in pregnancy and pregnant outcomes’, which attracted many clinicians and researchers in our hospital came.

Professor Richard Saffery from Melbourne Children’s Hospital in Australia visited BIGCS.

Professor Jean-Baptiste Cazier, the chair and director of Center for Computational Biology (CCB) in University of Birmingham, which was the core leader of Bioinformatics in department of Oncology, head of Statistical Genetics and Functional Genomics Analysis in Oxford University, and Professor Georgios V. Gkoutos in the institute of Cancer and Genomic Sciences came to visit BIGSC.

To celebrate 130th anniversary of Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine in Hong Kong University, HK Television produced an interview with KK Cheng, an excellent alumnus in Hong Kong University, and follow his work and effort on developing Chinese general family medicine including establishing collaboration between Birmingham University and Born in Guangzhou Cohort study. Colleagues in our hospital helped HK TV conduct the interview in GWCMC. The interview progress was very smoothly and fruitful, and it can be a glorious record of our collaboration with Birmingham University.

Ben Mol from University of Adelaide, Australia, visited BIGCS. The meeting was held at Room 610 in Poly Clover. CEO Professor Xia, Dr. Qiu and her colleagues participated the meeting. The discussion in the meeting was mainly on two topics, including manuscript on GDM, prediction of hypertension in pregnancy and preeclampsia. Ben kindly provided several great suggestions based on his expertise.

Professor Wildman gave us a presentation on “Comparative genomics, Pregnancy and Obstetrical syndromes”. Over 30 colleagues from 7 departments in the hospital participated.

Derek Wildman, who is a Professor in University of Illinois, US, leader of the Computing Genomes for Reproductive Health (CGRH) Research Theme in the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology (IGB), member of Placenta Association of the Americas, Editor in Chief of Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution, one of the world’s leading journals in comparative sequence analysis, and his post doctor Priya, and Susanne came to visit BIGCS in GWCMC. CEO Professor Xia, Dr. Qiu and her colleagues welcomed them and participated the meetings. Dr. Qiu introduced BIGCS to Professor Wildman and they had warm discussion on future cooperation. Both of them thought Genome screening could be an interesting field for collaboration.
