Prof. Hubert Lam from Oxford University, who had long-term cooperation with BIGCS, visited the BIGCS for a week-long discussion and academic exchange. Two graduate students from Oxford University, Allison Gaines and Bethan Swift, also came to BIGCS with Prof. Lam. The two students were fully funded by Oxford University and began a one-month internship at BIGCS starting from 13 May 2019. During this period, they will discuss their graduation projects with the colleagues at BIGCS and complete data analysis for their own research direction. The arrival of the two students opens a new chapter in the cooperation between our medical center and Oxford University.

They were warmly welcomed by Professor Xia, CEO of the GWCMC. Professor Proud and Dr. Wang visited the recruitment and follow-up rooms and the biobank of the BIGCS. Professor Proud introduced the SAHMRI on a presentation and discussed the plan for further cooperation with the members from the BIGCS. Professor Proud and Dr. Wang praised the achievement of the GWCMC and looked forward to the cooperation between Guangzhou and South Australia in maternal and child health.

This visit is a wrap up of the pilot study and for the preparation of the initiation of formal project.

Professor Bo Jacobsson, an Obstetric and Gynecology at Sahlgrenska Academy, visited BIGCS. Professor Jacobsson was heading the Perinatal Laboratory Research Team located at one of Northern Europe’s most busy pregnancy and delivery wards with more than 10 000 deliveries a year. He also had an appointment as senior researcher and a research group at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health in Oslo, Norway. His main focus of research is a) to understand and describe different aspects of the preterm delivery process and child outcome, b) to explore the genetics and gene by environment interaction of timing of birth (including preterm delivery and post term delivery) c) to explore basic epidemiological relations regarding preterm delivery and child outcome d) to develop and test different methods for improving fetal medicine.

During the visit, professor Lam and Dr. Qiu and her teammates focused on many topics, such as mechanism of data management and sharing, different selection strategy of sample size for different researches, integration of ideas for data analysis, continuity of research papers. They discussed corresponding solution for aforementioned fields, and the concrete implementation plan.

The International conference on women and children’s health hosted by Nature, Guangzhou Women and Children’s Hospital Center, and Guangdong Province Hospital Association during March 22-24, 2018 in Guangzhou, China, was one of the most influential and highest levels conferences. This was also the first time that Nature focused on the field of women and children. More than 30 internationally famous experts in gynaecology and obstetrics, reproductive medicine, and pediatrics took part in this conference and delivered the keynote speeches. On March 23, 2018, the second day of the conference, the Born in Guangzhou Cohort study held a round table meeting with more than 30 experts, including three Nature senior editors Francesca Cesari, I-han Chou, Joao Monteiro, Professor Qi Zhou, Professor Ching-Hon Pui, Professor Patricia Hunt, Professor Kar Keung Cheng and Professor Huimin Xia.

Willem van Scha from the Institute of Microbiology and Infection at the University of Birmingham in the UK visited the recruitment and follow-up rooms and the biobank of the BIGCS. Professor Schaik highly praised the hospital for its emphasis and investment in scientific research, cohoet construction, and the hospital's achievements in the field of women and children's health research. Subsequently, Professor Willem van Schaik gave a brilliant lecture on gut microbiota and antibiotic resistance, and had in-depth discussions on issues related to microbiota and antibiotic resistance. Dr .Qiu and her colleagues took part in the reception and discussion. They first visited our recruiting room, follow-up room and biobank, and then participated in the discussion with Dr. Qiu about the development of the Guangzhou cohort study. The purpose of this visit is to follow up the memorandum of cooperation between the Innovate UK and the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Agency signed in mid-2017 and to do preparations for the next joint funding project.

David Olson, professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics Physiology at the University of Alberta, the founding director or co-director of the University of Alberta Perinatal Research Centre, member of the CIHR Group in Perinatal Health and Disease, the CIHR Strategic Training Initiative in Maternal-Fetal-Newborn Health Research, and the AIHS Interdisciplinary Preterm Birth and Healthy Outcomes Team, came to visit GWCMC and BIGCS. To celebrate 130th anniversary of Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine in Hong Kong University, HK Television produced an interview with KK Cheng, an excellent alumnus in Hong Kong University, and follow his work and effort on developing Chinese general family medicine including establishing collaboration between Birmingham University and Born in Guangzhou Cohort study. Colleagues in our hospital helped HK TV conduct the interview in GWCMC. The interview progress was very smoothly and fruitful, and it can be a glorious record of our collaboration with Birmingham University.
